Digital solutions at the service of the Aviation industry
Diota leverages Industry 4.0 technologies to help civil & military aircraft manufacturers
and suppliers to improve efficiency in production and reach highest quality standards.
Digital solutions for the Aeronautics
Safety, fierce competition, pandemic, production ramp-up, pressure on costs… Over the past decade the aviation market has faced challenges in many ways like never before. In addition to this challenging context, growing regulations, ability to manage rising demand for variable configurations, and the difficulty in finding qualified workers are also pushing aeronautical players to reinvent themselves.
For more than 10 years we have been supporting the aviation industry leaders in the production of aircraft, engines, and sub-equipment. Diota assists assembly and inspection operations thanks to digital technologies including AR to ensure quality, efficiency and traceability of manufacturing and MRO activities.
Industry challenges
Ensuring competitiveness, productivity, quality, and customer satisfaction
Complexity of aviation programs keeps growing, whether linked to the development of new materials, technologies, or regulations, or to answer to the growing demand from customers for more customization. In such context, ensuring quality and first time right while dealing with so many different configurations is a real challenge. To ensure efficiency of production, decrease the number of non-conformities and reduce cost of error, heads of production and quality must act on processes and bring new tools to the shopfloor to make assembly and inspection operations simpler and more reliable, while ensuring traceability.
OEMs and suppliers are confronted to productivity challenges and need to be flexible and agile enough to quickly adjust themselves to the variation in production rate. Operators in the field must be able to easily switch from one configuration to another and to adapt to changes in manufacturing process. Ultimately, the challenge lies in the ability to reach production agility while ensuring quality, managing costs and guaranteeing safety.
Growing competition from new actors, aftermarket consolidation, new advanced technologies, labor shortage, cost management…: a number of major disruptors are impacting the MRO market. However and despite the development of digital technologies in the whole industry, the Maintenance & Repair world is still the least digitized sector of the chain, which doesn’t help to face the market challenges. Time has come to change and go for more efficient, paperless checks and high-quality documentation through the adoption of digital solutions in the shopfloor to increase competitiveness and customer satisfaction.
Diota brings Industry 4.0 concept to the aeronautic industry and makes it a reality.
Digitalization of processes in aeronautic manufacturing industry is not an option anymore to face all these challenges. With our digital solutions, we leverage the digital mock-up in the field, bringing it in the hands of the operators to assist them in their assembly and control tasks.
We ensure digital continuity at each step of the product lifecycle, from its production up to its exploitation for maintenance activities. We make the digital model the unique reference for assembly, inspection or MRO operations and feed the digital twin. Diota’s solution also helps rapid skill ramp-up and allows more agility and flexibility in resources management.
Solution: how we help
We empower operators and quality managers with efficient digital tools to optimize cycle times, improve collaboration and reduce non-quality.
1. Project preparation
Prepare your digital work instructions based in relation with the DMU and set up the augmented reality reference model before exporting your project to be used on the field
2. Follow digital work instruction
Step-by-step assembly or quality control instructions and contextual information are displayed using digital devices such as tablets, projector, hololens or other AR systems to assist the operator in its tasks.
3. Collect field data
User can interact with the software to capture pictures, add comments and annotations. As-built and as-serviced results, process stage validation and user feedback are automatically recorded and associated with the digital mock-up.
4. Report & Analysis
Data collected during field operations in connection with the digital reference effectively feed production analytics and digital twins. Process engineers can rely on them for action and decisions.
Automated quality control & documentation
Use cases
- Context: Assembly of structure, engine modules, electrical harnesses or high precision operations such as masking or metrological marking.
- Challenge: Long preparation time before execution, difficult identification of the correct configuration and relevant procedures due to complex paper-based manuals.
- Solution: Diota helps to make processes simpler and avoid mistakes: operators are guided step-by-step thanks to interactive digital work instructions during assembly tasks.
- Result: No more risk of errors due to wrong interpretation and execution of work instructions, no more time-consuming preparation tasks (marking systems, calculation…).
- Context: Assembly of aerostructure sub-assemblies involving a wide variety of support and fixings (brackets, harnesses, clamp, screws…)
- Challenge: Current process does not always identify errors: risk of late non-conformity detection leading to additional reworking time and costs.
- Solution: Intuitive assistance for the verification of the conformity: indication of precise positioning of elements and in-process inspection to check right configuration.
- Result: Detection of potential anomalies early in the manufacturing phase decrease need for further rework and thus reduce costs and saves time.
- Context: Masking sensitive areas on equipment before painting operations
- Challenge: Difficult identification of the areas to be masked from 2D documentation, risk of errors due to transposition from 2D to reality, long operation
- Solution: Paint masking instructions are displayed using Augmented Reality, indicating precise positioning of areas to mask to the operator
- Result: Reduction of execution and process update time, non-quality costs divided by up to 7*.

- Context: Preliminary inspection of equipment on arrival in an MRO context to give a general picture of the asset to the customer and diagnose the repairs to be made.
- Challenge: Long, subjective and paper-based process not capturing all damages, leading to customer complaints for missing information
- Solution: Standardized step-by-step guidance on inspection process and automatic generation of customer-focused report
- Result: Reduction of inspection time up to 84%*, standard, streamlined and repeatable process, automatic generation of well-documented and personalized inspection reports
- Context: Final inspection performed before equipment leaves the factory, involving the verification of a high number of points according to variable standards
- Challenge: Long process requiring a team of several people to check all control points with lack of traceability.
- Solution: Assisted or automated inspection thanks to location of control areas, defect identification via as-designed/as-built comparison and capture of unexpected/unsought nonconformities.
- Result: Reliable, repeatable, complete and faster inspection increasing quality and customer satisfaction.
- Context: Need to provide data reports for documentation and traceability purpose.
- Challenge: Paper-based processes, errors in non-conformities identification and localization, incomplete reports. Current documentation not associated to the digital mock-up.
- Solution: Field data capture of the “as build” including pictures, annotation, defect picking, and automated generation of reports and database.
- Result: Complete reports for traceability, documentation sharing with customers or for further analysis ; data are feeding the digital twin.
